Women and children living in areas of armed conflict in Africa: A geospatial analysis of mortality and orphanhood

The Lancet Global Health Nov 15, 2019

Wagner Z, Heft-Neal S, Wise PH, et al. - The extent to which mortality among women aged 15–49 years, and orphanhood among children younger than 15 years, progressed in response to a nearby armed dispute in Africa was investigated in order to examine the impacts of dispute on mortality among women of childbearing age (15–49 years) and on orphanhood among children younger than 15 years in Africa. Data on 1,629,352 women was reviewed. It was found out that from nearby high-intensity armed conflicts, African women of childbearing age are at a substantially heightened risk of death. Children revealed to the dispute are analogously at heightened risk of becoming orphans. Thus, this work completes gaps in the literature on the adverse impacts of armed conflict on non-combatants and reflects the requirement for humanitarian interventions to shield vulnerable populations.
