Mooijaart SP, Puy RSD, Stott DJ, et al. – Via conducting a prospectively planned pooled analysis of data from 2 randomized clinical trials involving 251 individuals aged ≥ 80 years, researchers evaluated the association of levothyroxine treatment for subclinical hypothyroidism with thyroid-related quality of life. Individuals were randomized to receive levothyroxine (n = 112) or placebo (n = 139). At least one adverse event occurred in 33 participants in the levothyroxine group and 40 in those in the placebo group. Treatment with levothyroxine, compared with placebo, was not significantly related to improvement in hypothyroid symptoms or fatigue. Thus, these findings do not support routine use of levothyroxine in adults aged ≥ 80 years for the treatment of subclinical hypothyroidism.
