Akuka A, et al. - Via a case-control study using the medical database of the Clalit-Health-Services, experts examined the relationship between systemic sclerosis (SSc) and hyperthyroidism. The study included 2,431 SSc individuals and 12,710 age- and gender-matched controls. Age, female gender, and diagnosis of SSc were all independently related to hyperthyroidism. During a mean follow-up of 17 years, individuals with SSc and hyperthyroidism had a 1.54-fold rise of mortality rates compared with SSc individuals without hyperthyroidism, even though at the Cox multivariate survival analysis, just age and diagnosis of SSc was correlated with a greater risk of mortality. In summary, among SSc individuals, hyperthyroidism is highly prevailing and can negatively affect their survival rates. Hence, in all SSc individuals, preemptive screening could be assured. To assess whether tight control, additional studies are required and optimal treatment for hyperthyroidism could result in a decrease of all-cause mortality in individuals with SSc.
