Association of psoriasis with the risk of developing or dying of cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis

JAMA Oct 23, 2019

Trafford AM, et al. - Researchers conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of 58 unique observational studies (50 reporting on cancer incidence and 15 on cancer mortality, including 7 reporting on both) to determine the risk of cancer incidence and cancer mortality in people with psoriasis. The outcomes revealed an increased risk of cancer (overall) in association with severe psoriasis and all severities of psoriasis; they observed the associations for a range of site-specific cancers, including colon, colorectal, kidney, laryngeal, liver, lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, keratinocyte cancers, esophageal, oral cavity, and pancreatic. Patients with severe psoriasis exhibited higher overall cancer mortality risk. Elevated mortality was observed specifically in correlation with liver, esophageal, and pancreatic cancer among those with severe psoriasis. These findings infer the influence of cancer as a comorbidity in people with psoriasis, and that dermatologists should be aware of this increased risk.
