Increased risk of psoriasis in children and elderly patients with asthma: A longitudinal follow-up study using a national sample cohort

International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology Oct 22, 2019

Kim SY, et al. - Since several previous studies documented the high risk of asthma in children with psoriasis, researchers used the 2002-2013 Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service–National Sample Cohort to expand previous research on the risk of psoriasis in children with asthma to an entire population subdivided by age. The 167,693 candidates with asthma were matched with 167,693 control candidates for age, sex, income, region of residence, hypertension history, diabetes history, and dyslipidemia history. The occurrences of asthma were examined in both asthma and control groups. Data reported that psoriasis prevalence was 0.5% in the asthma group and 0.4% in the control group. An association was found between asthma and elevated risk of psoriasis. When managing asthma patients, the possible risk of psoriasis needs to be considered. According to asthma endotypes, future research is needed for the risk of psoriasis.
