Complicating effects of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome on the severity of adult asthma

Journal of Asthma Oct 21, 2019

Oyama B, Tsuburai T, Tsuruoka H, et al. - Among patients (n = 60) under treatment for bronchial asthma (BA) and who also underwent portable polysomnography (PSG) for suspected obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), researchers performed a retrospective analysis to evaluate the potential link between PSG outcomes and asthma treatment or respiratory function, given BA and OSAS may exacerbate each other. BA was diagnosed and treated as per the Asthma Prevention and Management Guideline 2015. Despite good respiratory function observed in BA patients with OSAS, these patients suffered a more severe BA as compared with that of patients without OSAS, this indicates that BA may be exacerbated by OSAS. PSG results could not be predicted by background factors and asthma parameters. Via PSG, a proactive assessment of patients with suspected OSAS was recommended.
