Healthy dietary patterns and incidence of CKD: A meta-analysis of cohort studies

Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology Oct 14, 2019

Bach KE, et al. - By analyzing the eligible prospective cohort studies (n = 18) with 630,108 adults (no children) who were observed for 10.4 ± 7.4 years, researchers examined the links between dietary patterns and the incidence of CKD in adults and children, via this systematic review and meta-analysis. By exploring MEDLINE, Embase and, references from eligible studies, they identified potential studies. Including dietary patterns as the primary exposure, prospective and retrospective cohort investigations on adults and children without CKD, reporting the incidence of CKD (eGFR < 60 ml/min per 1.73 m2) were considered eligible for inclusion. Higher consumptions of vegetables, fruit, legumes, nuts, whole grains, fish and low-fat dairy, and lower consumptions of red and processed meats, sodium, and sugar-sweetened beverages were promoted by healthy dietary patterns. A lower incidence of CKD, and incidence of albuminuria was reported in correlation with a healthy dietary pattern. Overall, experts concluded that CKD and albuminuria may be prevented by a healthy dietary pattern.
