Complications of Palatal Pillar Implants: An analysis of the MAUDE database and literature review

American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Oct 14, 2019

Povolotskiy R, et al. - Since the Pillar Palatal Implant System is a minimally invasive technique for treating obstructive sleep apnea and snoring, researchers conducted this investigation to thoroughly examine its complications. For cases reporting injury related to the pillar procedure, the Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) database was queried. Of the 261 reported cases, 73.6% reporting extruding parts, 47.5% described patient pain, and 38.7% included patients reporting a feeling for foreign body. Infection was reported in 7.7% of cases specifically mentioned in one case with cellulitis and abscess formation. Cases reporting pain and swallowing problems were much more likely to have reported extruding parts. The information of these complications and the related literature review may provide an overview of the extent of adverse events associated with this procedure for healthcare professionals and patients.
