Educational attainment in childhood cancer survivors: A meta-analysis

Archives of Diseases in Childhood Oct 14, 2019

Saatci D, et al. - In this systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies, researchers evaluated differences across educational outcomes in survivors of childhood cancer (CCS) vs peers. There were 26 studies covering 28,434 CCS, 17,814 matched controls, 6,582 siblings and six population studies from 11 high-income countries with similar access to education and years of mandatory schooling as stated by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. Compared with controls, survivors are significantly less likely to progress from primary level onto secondary level education or to complete tertiary level education. This is continued in various countries, making it an international issue. Involvement of central nervous system plays a key role in educational achievement. Clinicians, educators and policymakers should be made aware of disparities and consider seeking for early educational support for survivors.
