A prospective cohort study of collegiate fencing injuries
Current Sports Medicine Reports Oct 14, 2019
Walrod B, et al. - In order to generate more data on collegiate fencing injuries, researchers undertook this prospective cohort analysis, wherein, they evaluated the rates and types of injuries that occurred to a college fencing team over the course of a year. A low injury rate was reported, with 2.43 injuries per 1000 athlete exposures. A time loss of less than 2 wk was reported in 75% of those injured. Musculoskeletal injuries constituted a large percentage (88%) of the overall injuries that occurred. The numbers of acute and chronic injuries were equal. The rate of injury in men was similar to that noted in women. They found that the majority of the injuries happened in practice over competition (87.5% vs 12.5%, respectively). The data from a small subset population were compared with the current proof published about fencing injuries. On comparing certain populations, some similarities and also some discrepancies were evident.
