Maternal perception of the impact of anterior caries and its treatment on children: A qualitative study

Custódio NB, et al. - Via recruiting a purposive sample of parents of preschool children attending a University Dental Clinic, researchers evaluated parental perception about children's oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) following the rehabilitation of carious primary anterior teeth. Using a thematic analysis approach, the responses were analysed. Mothers of 10 children aged 4-8 years old partook in this qualitative study. During data analysis, four themes emerged: perception about the presence and occurrence of caries; impact on the child's OHRQoL; impact on family's OHRQoL; and Changes in OHRQoL following oral rehabilitation. According to the findings, children's mothers with anterior teeth dental caries reported impact on the lives of children and their families. Studies from mothers have found that oral rehabilitation has induced positive changes in the well-being and everyday life of their children.
