Overweight/obese children are associated with lower caries experience than normal-weight children/adolescents

International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry Oct 13, 2019

Guaré RO, et al. - In this cross-sectional study involving 91 candidates (aged 6 to 12 years), researchers compared enamel carious (EC) and dentin carious (DC) lesions and caries risk, between normal-weight (NW) and overweight/obese (OW) children/adolescents. Two criteria were used to test caries experience using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS): “EC/DC” (ICDAS 1-3/4-6) and “DC” (ICDAS 4-6). According to findings, caries experience was comparable for both groups at the “EC/DC” threshold and higher for the NW group at the “DC” threshold. For Caries Management by Risk Assessment, caries risk classification was comparable for both groups. According to this logistic regression, the OW group was less likely to show radiographically visible proximal carious lesions, thick biofilm visible on the tooth surface, high caries risk, and moderate-to-high caries levels. At both ICDAS thresholds, OW children/adolescents had lower caries experience and lower caries risk vs NW children/adolescents.
