Dental treatment improves the oral health-related quality of life of adolescents: A mixed-methods approach
International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry Oct 12, 2019
Maroneze MC, et al. - Researchers conducted a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design to determine and understand the impact of dental treatment on adolescents' oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). The study sample consisted of 182 adolescents (aged 10 and 15 years old) who had finished their dental treatment at adolescent dental clinic of Federal University of Santa Maria from 2010 to 2016. Data reported that the effect sizes ranged from 0.35 to 1.00 and the greatest effect was on the oral symptom domain. Sixteen interviews have been conducted and five themes have emerged: concept of quality of life, oral health affected by oral conditions, oral health symptoms affecting seeking care behavior, personal and subjective experiences, and dental educational environment. Dental treatment has an uncountable meaning for teenagers because in this phase of life it has a psychosocial significance and it can boost their OHRQoL.
