Cho N, Kang RS, McCartney CJL, et al. - In this review, researchers pooled data from 10 studies (700 patients) to determine the absolute analgesic effectiveness of suprascapular nerve block vs control for shoulder surgery. They pooled data using random-effects modelling. Postoperative 24-h cumulative oral morphine intake and the difference in area under the curve for 24-h pooled pain scores were regarded as the primary outcomes. For these primary outcomes, the statistical but not clinical superiority of suprascapular nerve block to control was evident in these studies. Nonetheless, reduced odds of postoperative nausea and vomiting as well as improved patient satisfaction were observed in relation to suprascapular nerve block. Overall, no clinically significant analgesic benefits for shoulder surgery were offered by the landmark-guided posterior suprascapular nerve block.
