Stallings-Smith S, et al. - Researchers determined how smoke-free policies can influence 30-day readmission rates for adults aged ≥ 65 years after hospitalization for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the US. At the county level, they merged data from the US Tobacco Control Laws Database, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program, American Hospital Association, Area Health Resource File, and US Census Bureau Current Population Survey for years 2013–2016 and these data were studied in 2018. Findings revealed the effectiveness of smoke-free policies in reducing 30-day readmissions after hospitalization because of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Reduced risk was observed in relation to implementation of stronger policies. Inclusion of the implementation of smoke-free policies in attempts to attenuate chronic obstructive pulmonary disease–associated 30-day readmissions was recommended.
