Long-term functional outcomes after robotic vs retropubic radical prostatectomy in routine care: A 6-year follow-up of a large German health services research study
World Journal of Urology Sep 25, 2019
Baunacke M, Schmidt ML, Thomas C, et al. - Researchers performed a comparison of long-term functional outcomes after robotic radical prostatectomy (RP) vs retropubic RP for patients with localized prostate cancer in routine care. In “HAROW”, a large German noninterventional health services research study, prospective evaluation of the treatment of patients with localized prostate cancer (≤ T2c) was done. Validated questionnaires were administered to 1,260 patients with the return rate of the questionnaire of 76.8% (936/1,218). A robotic approach was undertaken in 404 patients and the retropubic approach was undertaken in 532 patients. The analysis revealed better urinary continence and erectile function in correlation with younger age and lack of postoperative radiotherapy. Further, there was a correlation of a high annual caseload (≥ 200 RP/year) with better urinary continence. Independent predictors for a trifecta outcome were younger age, low or intermediated oncological risk and lack of postoperative radiotherapy. Long-term functional outcomes were not affected by the surgical approach.
