Improving fluid intake behavior among patients with kidney stones: Understanding patients’ experiences and acceptability of digital health technology

Urology Sep 21, 2019

Streeper NM, et al. - As increasing fluid intake to produce at least 2.5 L of urine daily is a well-established preventive strategy for reducing the risk of kidney stones, researchers sought to ascertain experiences with increasing fluid intake among kidney stone patients. Further, they sought for common barriers to adherence with this well-known and inexpensive recommendation, and technology-mediated intervention techniques that may improve adherence in this population. Patients with a history of kidney stones revealed work habits, travel, leisure activities, forgetting to drink, limited access to water, and not feeling thirsty as common barriers to increasing fluid intake. Efforts were made by the patients to enhance fluid intake via strategies such as carrying a water bottle, identifying contextual cues for drinking, self-monitoring fluid intake, and seeking social support. Wearing sensors to improve fluid intake were identified as interesting by patients if the sensor was aesthetically pleasing, had assured benefit and was able to connect to existing devices. Wearing a sensor as a wristband or bracelet was identified as most acceptable. these findings support exploration of using automated and semiautomated tracking technology in combination with evidence-based behavior change techniques in order to increase adherence to fluid intake recommendations.
