Geriatric syndromes in older adults living with HIV and cognitive impairment

Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Sep 19, 2019

Hosaka KRJ, Greene M, Premeaux TA, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers examined persons living with HIV (PLWH) aged ≥ 60 years with symptomatic cognitive impairment in order to determine the magnitude of geriatric conditions and multimorbidity in this patient population. They also studied the links between these geriatric conditions in a subset of participants. This study was conducted at the University of California, San Francisco, Memory and Aging Center. Incontinence was reported by 58% of older PLWH with mild neurocognitive disorder. In addition, 55% satisfied criteria for pre-frailty, and dependence with instrumental activities of daily living (52%) or activities of daily living (41%) was reported by a significant proportion of participants. The estimated mean Veterans Aging Cohort Study index score was 33 (standard deviation = 14), indicating a 5-year all-cause mortality risk of 13.8%. Findings revealed a substantial burden of other geriatric conditions among participants. For cognitively impaired people aging with HIV, the necessity of comprehensive geriatric systems of care was supported.
