Wennberg P, Möller M, Herlitz J, et al. - Among patients with hip fractures taking part in a double-blind, randomized, controlled trial (n = 127), researchers assessed if preoperative pain management with nerve blocks had any impact on cognitive status in the perioperative period. Participants were administered a low-dose fascia iliaca compartment block (FICB) at hospital admission as a supplement to regular analgesia. Findings revealed no influence of FICB on cognitive status in this patient population. Following a hip fracture, inadequate pain relief may be received in the presence of cognitive impairment. Patients with no or a moderate cognitive impairment received 50% more prehospital pain medication vs patients with a severe cognitive impairment.
