El-Menyar A, et al. - In this retrospective analysis, researchers focused on the consequences of fall from a height (FFH) among older adults, presuming that injury and mortality associated with fall are the same in both genders in an elderly population. They analyzed data from patients admitted to a Level 1 Trauma center because of sustaining fall injury at the age of at least 60 years. They found that female participants more commonly sustained FFH but males exhibited worse outcomes. Two-thirds of FFH occurred at a height ≤ 1 m. Independent predictors of mortality included shock index and male gender, as revealed in multivariate analysis. Experts concluded that there is a necessity of preventive measures for falls at home for the older adults of both genders.
