Kim DH, et al. - After searching for PubMed, Embase, SCOPUS, the Web of Science, the Cochrane library, and Google Scholar, researchers conducted a systemic review and meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness of piezoelectric osteotomy in decreasing edema and ecchymosis during rhinoplasty. Studies that compared piezoelectric osteotomy (treatment groups) with a conventional osteotomy (control group) were included. According to results, intraoperative mucosal injury in the treatment group was significantly lower than in the control group, but in the treatment group, operative time was longer. Compared with conventional osteotomy, piezoelectric osteotomy during rhinoplasty can lessen eyelid edema and eyelid ecchymosis. Piezoelectric osteotomy, however, did not have any important benefits in postoperative edema and ecchymosis compared with direct vision osteotomy.
