Peres MFP, et al. - Via performing a cross-sectional study of 465 migraine patients, researchers sought to describe the patients' journey profile until their first appointment with a headache specialist. They reviewed medical charts from migraine patient indicating starting of the pain on average 17.1 years before the first appointment with a headache specialist and classification of most of these as having chronic migraine (51.7%), with an average frequency of 15.5 days per month. Following stratification by migraine-type as episodic or chronic, chronic migraine patients more frequently underwent MRI test, acupuncture, psychotherapy, used preventive drugs and stated to have taken topiramate without beneficial effects. The findings suggest that before getting to a headache specialist, Brazilian patients with migraine experiment a long journey.
