Body mass index and outcomes of cardiac resynchronization with implantable cardioverter-defibrillator therapy in older patients with heart failure
European Journal of Heart Failure Aug 19, 2019
Echouffo-Tcheugui JB, et al. - Using the National Cardiovascular Data Registry Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator Registry, researchers examined the link between body mass index and heart failure (HF) results following cardiac resynchronization therapy with defibrillator (CRT-D) implantation. A total of 18,922 Medicare beneficiaries (aged ≥ 65 years) with HF undergoing first-time CRT-D were observed for 3 years after implantation. The presence of overweight or obesity was seen in most of the elderly patients with HF receiving CRT-D. Greater risks of death and hospitalization were observed in correlation with being underweight. Post-CRT-D, a lower risk of death was reported in overweight and obese patients.
