Caspar-Teuscher M, et al. - After a neonatal arterial ischemic stroke (NAIS), researchers studied health-related quality of life (HRQOL) and manual ability 5 years through prospectively obtaining data by the Swiss Neuropaediatric Stroke Registry between 2000 and 2010. Using the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID-II), cognitive and motor outcomes were evaluated 2 years after NAIS. HRQOL was evaluated with the KIDSCREEN-27 and manual ability with the ABILHAND-Kids after 5 years. At the age of 2 years, 74 patients were examined, 61 patients underwent a follow-up examination at the age of 5 years. HRQOL is similar to that of typically developing peers 5 years after NAIS but decreased in children with cerebral palsy (CP). The lower HRQOL is associated with poorer manual ability. Improving hand function interventions could affect HRQOL and should be considered early on. In children with CP vs children without CP, the ABILHAND-Kids measure was significantly lower.
