Magnetic resonance imaging-targeted biopsy vs systematic biopsy in the detection of prostate cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis

European Urology Aug 20, 2019

Kasivisvanathan V, Stabile A, Neves JB, et al. - A literature search was done by the experts in order to contrast the detection rates of clinically notable and clinically unimportant cancer by MRI-targeted prostate biopsy (MRI-TB) with those by systematic biopsy in men who underwent a prostate biopsy to recognize prostate cancer. A total of 68 studies with a paired design and eight RCTs were involved, including a total of 14,709 men who either received both MRI-TB and systematic biopsy or were randomized to receive one of the tests. MRI-TB recognized more men with clinically important cancer than a systematic biopsy and fewer men with clinically unimportant cancer vs a systematic biopsy. The proportion of cores positive for cancer was greater for MRI-TB vs systematic biopsy. Thus, MRI-TB was concluded as an engaging alternative diagnostic strategy to systematic biopsy.
