Blom-Høgestøl IK, Mala T, Kristinsson JA, et al. - In candidates with and without type 2 diabetes (T2D) preoperatively and 1 year after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), researchers conducted this prospective cohort study to analyze bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) fraction of the hip, as well as factors correlated with BMAT change. Preoperatively and 1 year after RYGB, morbidly obese patients with a planned RYGB procedure were examined. Forty-four candidates were involved, and preoperative examinations were feasible in 35. It was noted that preoperative BMAT fraction was positively correlated with glycosylated hemoglobin and negatively related to areal bone mineral density (aBMD). In obese individuals, a high BMAT appears to be linked to lower aBMD and worse glycemic control. A significant reduction in BMAT was noted after RYGB, but it did not vary among respondents with and without T2D; instead it seemed to be gender-specific.
