Association between blood pressure variability, cardiovascular disease and mortality in type 2 diabetes: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism Aug 18, 2019
Chiriacò M, Pateras K, Virdis A, et al. - Among adult patients with type 2 diabetes (n = 377,305), researchers examined the relationships between blood pressure variability (BPV)—expressed as long term (visit-to-visit) and short term (ambulatory blood pressure monitoring [ABPM] and home blood pressure monitoring [HBPM])—and all-cause mortality, major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs), extended MACEs, microvascular complications (MiC), and hypertension-mediated organ damage (HMOD). According to findings, variability of systolic BP was linked to a significantly increased risk of all-cause mortality, MACEs, extended MACEs and MiCs, while diastolic BP was not. According to qualitative analysis, BPV was linked to the presence of HMOD, expressed as carotid intima-media thickness, pulse wave velocity, and left ventricular hypertrophy. The findings indicate that BPV could provide extra data on the danger of cardiovascular disease in patients with type 2 diabetes rather than mean BP.
