Sex differences in hypertension and stroke risk in the REGARDS study: A longitudinal cohort study

Hypertension Aug 17, 2019

Madsen TE, Howard G, Kleindorfer DO, et al. - In this longitudinal cohort study that was conducted in the continental United States, researchers assessed sex differences in the link between hypertension severity and treatment and ischemic stroke risk. This study included 26,461 participants without prevalent stroke at baseline. Incident ischemic stroke confirmed by telephone surveillance was assessed as the main outcome. Overall, 1,084 confirmed ischemic stroke events were reported among participants (55.4% women; 40.2% black). In the adjusted model, women vs men demonstrated a higher risk of stroke per each level of hypertension (referent/systolic blood pressure < 120 mmHg/120–129 mmHg/130–139 mmHg/ > 140 mmHg). An increase in stroke risk by 23% for women and 21% for men was reported with each additional class of medications vs no medications.
