Perioperative risk factors for post-thyroidectomy hematoma: Significance of pain and ketorolac usage

Head & Neck Aug 18, 2019

Lee M, et al. - Because post-thyroidectomy hematoma (PH) is rare but may be a life-threatening complication, researchers investigated perioperative risk factors for PH with emphasis on perioperative hemodynamics, pain, and medications. To identify independent risk factors, univariate and multivariate analyses were performed. Twenty-two cases of PH were detected in 1,780 thyroid surgeries. Use of antithrombotic agent, postoperative pain, and two or more postoperative doses of ketorolac have been recognized as independent risk factors for PH. PH was not affected by perioperative hemodynamics. It is recommended proper pain control and judicious use of ketorolac.
