The association of angiopoietin-like peptide 4 levels with obesity and hepatosteatosis in adolescents

Cytokine Aug 17, 2019

Dikker O, et al. - Researchers examined the link between serum angiopoietin-like peptide 4 (ANGPTL-4) levels and obesity and hepatosteatosis in 85 volunteer adolescents, including 55 obese and 30 normal weight adolescents. They defined ‘obese adolescents with hepatosteatosis’ subgroup including 30 patients with grade 2–3 hepatosteatosis in abdominal ultrasound (USG), and ‘obese adolescents without hepatosteatosis′ group including 25 obese cases with no hepatosteatosis in the USG. Another group, named as ‘healthy control adolescents′ group included 30 patients with no hepatosteatosis in the abdominal USG and with BMI in normal percentiles based on their age and sex. Findings revealed elevated levels of ANGPTL-4 in obesity in adolescents. However, based on the findings, it became difficult to establish a link between hepatosteatosis and ANGPTL-4. For the pathogenesis and related complications of obesity, the possible benefit of targeting ANGPTL-4 was suggested.
