Kent T, et al. - In a nationally representative sample of older adults with dementia, the odds ratio of 30-day emergency department (ED) revisits were assessed. Among Medicare beneficiaries with and without a dementia diagnosis prior to or at index ED visit, the frequency of claims related to a 30-day ED revisit was evaluated. A logistic regression model was used, controlling for dementia, age, sex, race, region, Medicaid status, transfer to a skilled nursing facility following ED, primary care physician use 12 months prior to index, and comorbidity. As a qualifying index encounter, researchers included only outpatient claims related to an ED visit between January 2016 and November 2016. Findings revealed that 30-day ED revisits were significantly predicted by dementia diagnoses. The likelihood of having experienced an ED revisit within 30 days was greater among those with a dementia diagnosis at or before the index ED visit.
