Depressive symptoms and onset of functional disability over 2 years: A prospective cohort study

Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Aug 16, 2019

Kong D, et al. – In this study involving US Chinese older adults (n = 2,713), the link between depressive symptoms and onset of functional disability over 2 years was assessed. Researchers conducted a prospective cohort investigation using survey data from the Population Study of Chinese Elderly in Chicago. After adjusting for covariates, consistently higher odds of Activities of Daily Living disability onset, Instrumental Activities of Daily Living disability onset, and mobility disability onset were reported in correlation with higher levels of depressive symptoms vs less-depressed counterparts. Older age and more chronic physical conditions were documented as other significant risk factors. Overall, a significant link between depressive symptoms and onset of functional disability was highlighted. In this population, disability might be attenuated by screening and, subsequently, treating depressive symptoms. Chinese older adults at greater risks for functional disability may be identified via culturally relevant depressive symptom screening.
