Association between vitamin D supplementation and mortality: Systematic review and meta-analysis

BMJ Aug 16, 2019

Zhang Y, et al. – In this systematic review and meta-analysis of 52 randomized, controlled trials (n= 75,454), researchers examined whether vitamin D supplementation is correlated with lower mortality in adults. Vitamin D supplementation was not related to all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, or non-cancer, non-cardiovascular mortality. The risk of cancer death was statistically significantly decreased by vitamin D supplementation. In subgroup analyses, in trials with vitamin D3 supplementation vs trials with vitamin D2 supplementation, all-cause mortality was significantly lower, and neither vitamin D3 nor vitamin D2 was related to a statistically important decrease in all-cause mortality. Hence, in adults, vitamin D supplementation alone was not correlated with all-cause mortality vs placebo or no treatment. Moreover, vitamin D supplementation decreased the risk of cancer death by 16%.
