Association of ideal cardiovascular health at age 50 with incidence of dementia: 25 year follow-up of Whitehall II cohort study

BMJ Aug 13, 2019

Sabia S, Fayosse A, Dumurgier J, et al. - In this prospective cohort study, researchers explored the connection between the Life Simple 7 cardiovascular health score at age 50 and incidence of dementia. The study sample consisted of 7,899 individuals with data for cardiovascular health score at age 50. Over a median follow-up of 24.7 years, 347 incident cases of dementia were recorded. According to findings, adherence to the Life Simple 7 ideal cardiovascular health recommendations in midlife was linked to a lower risk of dementia later in life. This association was also noted during the follow-up in individuals who remained free from cardiovascular disease. Dementia risk reductions were apparent throughout the cardiovascular health score continuum, indicating that even small improvements in cardiovascular risk variables are likely to be helpful to cognitive health. This research supports public health policies to promote cognitive health by improving cardiovascular health as early as age 50 years.
