Ultrasound-guided glossopharyngeal nerve block via the styloid process for glossopharyngeal neuralgia: A retrospective study

Journal of Pain Research Aug 13, 2019

Liu Q, et al. - Ultrasound-guided glossopharyngeal nerve block via the styloid process for primary glossopharyngeal neuralgia was examined regarding its efficacy and safety. In this retrospective study, 12 patients who received glossopharyngeal nerve block via the styloid process under ultrasound guidance for primary glossopharyngeal neuralgia between January 2015 and May 2018 at researchers' hospital were included. Previous treatments received by the patients comprised pulsed mode radiofrequency (n = 4), microvascular decompression (n = 2), and glossopharyngeal nerve block (not under ultrasound guidance; n = 2). A total of 48 injections were administered for glossopharyngeal nerve block. Pain relief was reported in 10/12, 10/12, 7/12, and 4/12 patients at discharge from the hospital, and at 6, 12, and 18 months thereafter. This indicated the effective rate of 83.3% at discharge, 83.3% at 6 months, 58.3% at 1 year, and 33.3% at 18 months, respectively. These findings support the ultrasound-guided glossopharyngeal nerve block via the styloid process as a safe, radiation-free, repeatable, convenient, and effective treatment. For patients with glossopharyngeal neuralgia, it seems to be a valuable treatment option.
