Risk of hospitalization for serious adverse gastrointestinal events associated with sodium polystyrene sulfonate use in patients of advanced age
JAMA Aug 11, 2019
Noel JA, Bota SE, Petrcich W, et al. - In this population-level cohort study, researchers examined the link between sodium polystyrene sulfonate use and risk of hospitalization for adverse gastrointestinal (GI) events among older patients (aged ≥ 66 years) in Ontario, Canada. Of 1,853,866 eligible adults, 27,704 received sodium polystyrene sulfonate. A total of 20,020 sodium polystyrene sulfonate users were matched to 20,020 nonusers. A higher risk of hospitalization for serious adverse GI events was observed in relation to the use of sodium polystyrene sulfonate. The most common type of GI injury identified was intestinal ischemia/thrombosis. Exercising caution with the ongoing use of sodium polystyrene sulfonate was recommended.
