Outcomes of magnetic resonance imaging fusion-targeted biopsy of prostate imaging reporting and data system 3 lesions

Kim TJ, et al. - A total of 138 individuals with Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS) category 3 lesions classified using multiparametric MRI who underwent MRI-guided fusion-targeted biopsy between May 2016 and March 2018 were retrospectively reviewed by the researchers in order to assess the features and histological outcomes in such individuals. In all, 114 biopsied lesions were benign and 24 were discovered as prostate cancer (PCa). Fourteen of 24 lesions harbored clinically significant PCa (csPCa). Peripheral zone (PZ) lesions vs transition zone lesions were more likely to be correlated with the malignant disease. Independent predictors of both PCa and csPCa were age, PZ location, and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) density. Hence, csPCa was harbored by a non-negligible number of PI-RADS 3 individuals. Furthermore, potential clinical predictors of PCa and csPCa could be age, lesion location, and PSA density. Practitioners should be informed of the cancer prevalence of PI-RADS 3 lesions, as the use of the aforementioned factors could aid in the decision-making process for these individuals.
