Association between anthropometric indicators of obesity and cardiovascular risk factors among adults in Shanghai, China

BMC Public Health Aug 07, 2019

Zhang Y, Gu Y, Wang N, et al. - In this large-scale cross-sectional survey, researchers interviewed 35,256 adults aged 20–74 years in Shanghai, China, to identify the optimal cut-off values and assess the associations of BMI, waist circumference (WC), and waist-height ratio (WHtR) with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. In both men and women, the optimal cut-off values of WHtR were estimated to be around 0.51, while higher cut-off values of BMI and WC were reported for men vs women. For distinguishing hypertension and diabetes, the best performance was exhibited by WHtR, which may be of potential use as a standard screening tool in public health. The observed links between three anthropometric indices and CVD risk factors varied by sex and reduced with age. The requirement to develop age- and sex-specific difference and create effective policies for primary prevention of CVDs was suggested in this analysis.
