Efficacy and safety of dual combination therapy of blood pressure-lowering drugs as initial treatment for hypertension: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
Journal of Hypertension Aug 05, 2019
Salam A, Kanukula R, Atkins E, et al. - As initial treatment for hypertension, researchers evaluated dual combination of blood pressure (BP)-lowering drugs with respect to effectiveness and tolerability. They searched MEDLINE, Embase, CENTRAL until August 2017 and identified randomized, double-blind trials, involving adults with hypertension who were either treatment naïve or untreated for at least 4 weeks, reporting the impact of dual combination therapy vs monotherapy in these patients. This analysis included 33 trials (13,095 participants) with mean baseline mean BP 155/100 mmHg. Greater efficacy was seen with starting treatment with low-to-standard dose dual combination therapy vs standard-dose monotherapy, with no increases in withdrawals due to adverse events.
