The relationship between adherence to a Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension (DASH) dietary pattern and insomnia

BMC Psychiatry Aug 06, 2019

Rostami H, et al. - In adolescent girls, researchers examined how adherence to a DASH diet influences the prevalence of insomnia. From different regions of Khorasan Razavi in northeastern of Iran, 488 adolescent girls aged 12–18 years old were examined for insomnia using a validated Iranian version of the Insomnia Severity Index questionnaire. Significantly greater intakes of fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products, fish and nuts and a reduced consumption of refined grains, red and processed meat, sugar-sweetened beverages, and sweets were seen in participants in the upper quintile of the DASH diet. Adherence to DASH dietary patterns was observed to be inversely associated with insomnia.
