Prevalence of refractory hypertension in the United States from 1999 to 2014

Journal of Hypertension Aug 06, 2019

Buhnerkempe MG, Botchway A, Prakash V, et al. - Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES), researchers intended to provide unbiased estimates of the prevalence of refractory hypertension in the United States. Across 8 cycles of NHANES surveys (1999–2014), the drug-treated hypertensive population was analyzed for refractory hypertension prevalence after adjusting for the complex survey design and standardizing for age. A prevalence of 0.6% was reported, across all surveys, in drug-treated hypertensive adults; refractory hypertension was actually detected in 6.2% of individuals with treatment-resistant hypertension. Although the prevalence ranged from 0.3% to 0.9%, findings revealed no significant trend in prevalence over time. Advancing age, lower household income, black race, chronic kidney disease, albuminuria, diabetes, prior stroke, and coronary heart disease were found to be related to refractory hypertension. Concerning refractory hypertension prevalence in US adults, the first nationally representative estimate was offered in this study.
