Holder T, Sullivan AE, Truong T, et al. – To further understand the contemporary inpatient experience and practice patterns of the pulmonary embolism (PE) population as a whole, researchers examined patients with acute PE who were managed at a single large, multihospital academic health system. This analysis included 829 patients, of whom 6.0% underwent invasive PE treatments, 26.1% needed ICU admission, and 9.0% experienced in-hospital mortality or hospice discharge. A higher incidence of incomplete risk stratification and higher mortality (9.8%) was reported in patients who developed acute PE during hospitalization for another indication vs the primary cohort. PE-attributable mortality was reported in 48.4% of cases. Although advanced therapeutics are available, substantial healthcare utilization and high mortality were reported among participants.
