Yao K, Wang Y, Xu D, et al. – Via conducting a prospective observational survey involving 2,773 individuals with chest pain from 4 hospitals in Shanghai, China, between August 2016 and October 2017, experts examined the potential diagnostic value of ceramides for acute coronary syndrome (ACS) in Chinese patients with chest pain. Plasma levels of 12 ceramide molecules and corresponding ratios were contrasted amongst patients with ACS and patients without ACS. Following adjustment of traditional risk factors and high-sensitive cardiac troponin T, independent predictors of ACS were Cer(d18:1/24:1(15Z))/Cer(d18:1/24:0) ratio, Cer(d18:1/14:0) and Cer(d18:1/22:0). A marked improvement in detecting ACS in the multivariable model with ceramides in comparison with those without was demonstrated by receiver operating characteristic curve evaluation. Hence, among patients with chest pain, distinct plasma ceramides were concluded to be independent diagnostic predictors of ACS. In distinguishing ACS among patients with chest pain, ceramides together with high-sensitive troponin and traditional factors exhibited great potential.
