Mok Y, et al. - Given a robust predictive value of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) at the time of myocardial infarction (MI) for prognosis, researchers examined whether an association exist between their pre-morbid (before MI occurrence) levels and prognosis after incident MI. From the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study, 1054 participants with incident MI were evaluated for premorbid levels of hs-cTnT and NT-proBNP measured on average 5.8 [IQI 3.0–11.5] years prior to incident MI, and their associations with subsequent composite and individual outcomes of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular mortality, recurrent MI, heart failure, and stroke. The analysis revealed adverse outcomes after incident MI in correlation to premorbid levels of hs-cTnT and NT-proBNP assessed on average six years prior to incident MI. These results further highlight that cardiac health at an earlier stage of life is significant.
