Carotid ultrasound investigation as a prognostic tool for patients with diabetes mellitus

Cardiovascular Diabetology Jul 19, 2019

Hoke M, et al. - Since diabetes seems to have a major impact on atherogenesis in experimental and clinical data, researchers analyzed asymptomatic patients with carotid stenosis to determine if the impact of diabetes on long-term death in these subjects is contingent upon the magnitude of carotid atherosclerotic burden. This study included 1,065 patients with neurological asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis as assessed by duplex sonography. Participants were followed-up for a median duration of 11.8 years. Findings revealed an extraordinarily high risk for all-cause and cardiovascular death in diabetic patients with carotid stenosis ≥ 50%. For patients with diabetes mellitus, routine ultrasound of the carotid arteries is suggested as a valuable prognostic tool.
