Moonesinghe R, et al. - Researchers analyzed population data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey [2007–2014] to assess the link between self-reported family history of premature heart disease (FHPHD) and cardiovascular disease in 19,253 subjects. They also focused on the link between cardiovascular health metrics and FHPHD in 16,248 subjects. For ages 20 to 39, 40 to 59, and ≥60, the estimated family history odds ratios were 5.91, 3.02, and 1.87, respectively, for cardiovascular disease, when logistic regression and multivariable adjustment were used. Compared with those without a family history, the observed prevalence of cardiovascular disease was more than double in those with a FHPHD. For those with inadequate cardiovascular health, the estimated prevalence ratio for FHPHD was 1.98 than those with optimum cardiovascular health. Overall, FHPHD could help detect millions of people who are at high risk for cardiovascular disease and can be a significant part of public health campaigns that address modifiable risk factors that plan to attenuate the overall risk of heart disease.
