Long term functional success after pyeloplasty for pelvi-ureteral junction obstruction in unilateral poorly functioning kidney in exclusively adults population

Urology Jul 19, 2019

Elbaset MA, et al. - The database of 211 subjects admitted with unilateral UPJO treated with pyeloplasty were analyzed by the researchers to evaluate long-term clinical and functional results postpyeloplasty in unilateral UPJO in poorly functioning kidneys in exclusive adult population. Subjects were randomized into 2 groups (group A {split renal function [SRF] ≤20%} and group B {SRF >20% and <30%}). The SRF increased notably to 23.5 ± 7.5, after a median follow-up of 67.1 ± 11.8 months. In group A(n= 92), the SRF progressed from 14.3 ± 4.9 to 18.7 ± 7.1. Eighty-eight cases attained functional success, while it progressed from 24.9 ± 3.3 to 27.2 ± 6.3 at last follow-up in group B. One hundred and twenty-one cases achieved functional success. In serial follow-up renography, static SRF was discovered after 12 months of follow-up. Hence, in poorly functioning kidneys, pyeloplasty exhibited high rates of functional success. Further, SRF appeared to be static with no deterioration, after 12 months follow-up.
