Prevalence of COPD among workers with work-related asthma

Journal of Asthma Jul 19, 2019

Dodd KE, et al. - Researchers used data from the 2012–2014 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Asthma Call-back Survey to evaluate the proportion of ever-employed adults (≥18 years) with current asthma who have been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), by work-related asthma (WRA) status. They analyzed data for 23,137 respondents from 31 states and the District of Columbia. They calculated adjusted prevalence ratios, using logistic regression, assessing six disjoint classes of WRA-COPD overlap with non-WRA/no COPD as the referent category. Among adults with WRA vs those with non-WRA, a more frequent diagnosis of COPD was reported. More severe adverse asthma outcomes were observed among adults diagnosed with both WRA and COPD vs those with non-WRA and no COPD.
