Dess RT, et al. - In order to investigate how black race is associated with prostate cancer outcomes after controlling for known prognostic variables and access to care, researchers conducted multiple-cohort study including updated individual patient-level data of 306,100 men with clinical T1-4N0-1M0 prostate cancer. Cohorts from Veterans Affairs health system and National Cancer Institute–sponsored randomized clinical trials indicated no correlation of black race with inferior prostate cancer–specific mortality. The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results US population registry suggest an association of black race with increased prostate cancer–specific mortality, but not in the high-risk subgroup after baseline covariable adjustment, although black race remained associated with increased other-cause mortality. These findings suggest that black men with nonmetastatic prostate cancer show comparable stage-for-stage prostate cancer–specific mortality to white men with similar access to care and standardized treatment.
