Prevalence and incidence of anxiety and depression among children, adolescents, and young adults with life-limiting conditions: A systematic review and meta-analysis

JAMA Jul 16, 2019

Barker MM, et al. - Through a systematic review and meta-analysis of 37 articles published between January 2000 and January 2018, researchers assessed the prevalence and/or incidence of anxiety and depression amongst children, adolescents, and young adults with life-limiting conditions. Of the eligible studies, 19 listed reported anxiety prevalence and 36 reported depression prevalence. The meta-analysis of anxiety prevalence resulted in a pooled prevalence estimate of 19.1%. Statistically meaningful variations in anxiety prevalence were identified, and diagnostic interviews were correlated with greater anxiety prevalence than self-reported or parent-reported measures. A pooled prevalence estimate of 14.3% was generated via depression meta-analysis. Upon meta-regression analysis, the investigators noted statistically significant differences in depression prevalence by the mean age of the sample. Thus, the prevalence of anxiety and depression in children, adolescents, and young adults with life-limiting conditions was high, reflecting the need for extended psychological assessment and monitoring.
